Here's something I've been thinking about for a few weeks now. How do those of you who have adult content in your comics deal with the content warnings?

NSFW comes in many shapes and sizes, and varying degrees-- it could mean anything from "Rated T" to.. well.. porn. So how do you let your readers know just how far you go, while not being too terribly long winded? Or if you DO go so far, once or twice, how do you communicate it to your readers without giving them the expectation of NSFW content on a regular basis?

For that matter, do you even bother with content warnings at all? So much internet content is read-at-your-own-risk anyway, that warnings don't seem to be generally expected like they are with media like movies or videogames. What about context clues? Are there certain indications on a comics site that denote a certain target age-group, in the same way that, say, late-night television is assumed to be for adults?

I'm very curious to hear how other creators approach this issue; and what, as comics readers, you may have come to expect with regards to it.

Hi everybody!

My name is Gary Cohen and I am the writer and creator of a comic called Mallville Rules. The first thing you need to know is it's a funny super hero comic. A lot of the comedy deals with comic book traditions and tropes. But it's an original storyline. The comedy ranges from smart to silly to unapologetically filthy.

I think it's a concept that sounds familiar, but I hope we're handling it in a new and interesting way. In the town of Mallville everyone at the high school has super powers and dress like super heroes. But they don't receive any training at the high school. And they don't battle super villains. High school for the kids in Mallville is about as exciting as high school was, or is for you. In fact, all of the problems and struggles you had in high school are only exacerbated when you mix in the problems associated with having super powers.

The closest thing in style and tone in my opinion is the old Buffy the Vampire Slayer tv show. I'm also a hug fan of the X-Men, Batman, The Avengers, and The Fantastic Four.

A quick word about the structure.

Book 1 is written and drawn by me. I am a terrible artist. But there is still a lot of fun stuff in it.

Book 2 is written by me and for the most part drawn by Mike Shea who is a tremendous artist. It's also a soft reboot of the series. I kind of think you might want to start here as opposed to Book 1. But if you like it feel free to go back and enjoy Book 1.

Book 3 starts a new chapter, and a new artist Louie Chin. Also an incredible artist with a really cool style. There's no reason to start here. That would just be silly.

I am passionate about this project so please let me know what you think! I'd love to hear from you. Thanks for giving my comic a shot.

I've been coming here for the past few days and like any other forum, there are threads I don't wish to participate in... It's not that they're bad or anything, they're just not a discussion I will/can participate in... With that said, is there a Mark As Read option on the forums so I can clear out old posts that appear as new but are actually a few days old?

That'd be swell if there was such a feature. :D

Banner Exchange: clickable links for "sites that have dedicated spots for your comic"?

I really love that we have the ability to see which sites have put our banners into their rotation for the exchange box. My first response when I see a comic on that list is to want to reciprocate in kind and add them to my banner list... but it can be kind of difficult to find them when I scroll through the entire banner page, especially if I'm not familiar with their art style.

At some point, would it be possible to have a link next to each site on the dedicated spots list that would allow us to add their banner to the rotation with one click so that we don't have to go to the banner list?

So like "Fictional Comic Title (POWER: 98) [ADD BANNER TO YOUR EXCHANGE]"?

Maybe this is a frivolous request, but I thought I would suggest it just in case anyone else was wishing for the same feature :) Thank you for maintaining such an awesome site!

Using Social Media

We Are Not A Community, We Are A Stream: Social Media & Whim Kids

Here's a post that popped up on my tumblr dashboard last night. It's a little long, but mainly discusses the mindset of Generation Y and younger and how that relates to artists. Specifically, how we output work to appeal to a new group of viewers who are used to ingesting art in extremely fast, disposible bites. I thought it interesting and wondered how it effects anyone working on a longer form work that takes an immense amount of man hours to complete - like comics. Especially full colored, detailed, long form comics. The post seems to imply that all that work is a waste since viewers no longer care about technical skill; instead looking for a quick emotional punch (Oh, the FEELS!) and then it's on to the next thing. So as a creator, keep throwing more quick bites out, reel people in and don't ever give them a chance to forget you exist.

As someone who likes to savor art and long form reads, this makes me a little sad. Maybe this is something specific to tumblr, twitter and facebook, but it's also obvious that a one panel, gag a day strip is more apt to go viral since it holds no need for a reader to be steeped in backstory. There's also tones of reducing art to advertising, but art and business go hand in hand for anyone doing it professionally. Cutting out the middle man gives us power, but also makes us responsible for networking and branding as well as art. And not just for any audience, but an audience who wants more, more, more and wants it NOW (I'm guessing 'wants it free' is in there as well). Do likes and reblogs even translate into sales in the long run? For anyone hoping to engage an audience, it's worth a look. Lots of food for thought about how we use social media to get our work out there. Wondering if you guys are using social media, if you find this to be true and if it's effected how you use it.

Hey guys. Just wanted to officially pop my head in and introduce my comic strip The Angry Dead
http://theangrydead.com/

It's young now but it updates Won-Wed-Fri. TAD is about (as you might have guessed) the zombie apocalypes. It's a gag-a-day, four panel strip with some drama infused. I've been a huge fan of the genre forever and this strip is really just my love letter to the old fashioned zombie flick. I hope you guys like it. I also hope to be a useful and helpful dmember of this community. I really dig this service and am floored by some of the stuff I'm seeing out of other artists here. That's all for now :)
